Compliant to the upcoming latest safety regulations, the enhanced, clean and efficient bus will be available at Mitsubishi Fuso dealerships and regional sales centers across Japan from June 2.

The new Aero Star large route bus complies with the latest safety regulations which will become effective in July 2012 and incorporates the newly developed brake override system (BOS) as standard, in which brake function overrides vehicle acceleration when brake and accelerator pedals are pressed at the same time.

Regulation based on the Economic Commission for Europe Safety Regulation

“Fuso is committed to offering the best bus products and services for the safety of our customers, drivers and the society,” said Mr. Hiromitsu Hashiguchi, MFTBC Director of Fuso Bus Unit. “The brake override system is a technology incorporated for the first time in the industry in its class. Overall, Fuso is the leader in the large route bus segment and further strives for ‘Customer Number One in Japan,’ through leading products, customer-oriented sales, and dependable service.”

Stuttgart – Daimler Buses achieved its second-best sales result ever in 2011, selling a total of 39,740 vehicles or 2% more than in the previous year. The division achieved this result despite difficult sales conditions for complete buses. The only time that sales were even higher was in 2008, when almost 40,600 units were delivered. As a result, Daimler Buses continues to be the world’s leading supplier of buses weighing more than 8 tons GVW.

311,000 buses were sold worldwide, an increase of 2% compared to the previous year. Whereas business was booming particularly in Latin America, the bus market in Western Europe remained in a slump because of the financial and debt crisis. Market development was similarly negative in North America, which, like its Western European counterparts, suffered from public sector budget constraints and therefore from substantially fewer calls for bids.

The main reason for the rise in sales at Daimler Buses was the increased demand in Latin America, where the division boosted sales of Mercedes-Benz brand chassis by 8% to 25,000 units. Sales were also buoyed by purchases made earlier than planned due to the introduction of the Euro V emissions standard in Brazil in 2012. The market share of Daimler Buses in Latin America remained at a high level of around 43% in 2011. Substantial increases were posted in Mexico as well. Business was also good in Turkey, where sales rose by 55% to the record figure of 1,100 buses.

By contrast, Daimler Buses was unable to buck the downward trend in Western Europe and North America. As a result, sales dropped in Western Europe by 17% to 5,900 vehicles and chassis. Sales of city buses once again declined steeply, as the public sector continued to be negatively influenced by budget restraints. The division sold 600 buses in North America, or almost one third less than in 2010. Budgetary constraints were also the defining factor in this market.

Delivering up to 37 percent lower fuel consumption and with a much lower environmental impact than conventional diesels, Volvo hybrid buses have achieved significant market success around the world. Now, the company’s home town of Gothenburg has ordered 25 hybrid buses which are scheduled to enter service later this year.

Volvo has now sold a total of 100 buses powered by hybrid technology in the Nordic countries. The latest order to be received by Volvo Buses is for 25 hybrid buses for Göteborgs Spårvägar (Gothenburg Tramways), which operates public transport services on behalf of Västtrafik.

The hybrid buses are an important element of our programme of converting to fossil-free bus traffic while reducing fuel consumption. Their combination of low emissions, lower noise level, high capacity and low energy utilisation is very attractive,” comments Leif Blomqvist, chairman of the board of Västtrafik, the agency responsible for public transport services in Gothenburg.

More and more transport authorities and operators are now discovering the benefits of hybrid technology, with Nobina, Nettbuss and, most recently, Göteborgs Spårvägar, as the biggest customers in the Nordic countries.

We wanted environmentally favourable buses for a new application and we finally opted for Volvo hybrid buses, whose low fuel consumption makes a big difference to the quantity of emissions that they release,” says Director of Operations Bernt-Erik Johansson of Göteborgs Spårvägar.

The 25 Volvo 7700 hybrid buses are powered by a small diesel engine and an electric motor. Fuel consumption is radically reduced by the use of regenerative braking to recover the energy generated when the vehicle’s brakes are applied. The diesel engine is shut off at bus stops, enabling the bus to operate silently and emission-free on electricity. However, emissions from diesel operation are also low since the bus is fuelled by biodiesel. According to Volvo Buses, hybrid buses running on biodiesel have a distinctly lower environmental impact than other, comparable alternatives.

A motorcycle helmet is a protective headgear used by motorcycle riders. The primary goal of a motorcycle helmet is to protect the rider’s head during collision or accident, thus preventing or reducing head injury or saving the rider’s life. Research and surveys concluded that helmets reduce the risk of head injury by around 69% and death by around 42%. Helmet’s purpose is to save the rider’s head from brain injuries that are more serious than skull fractures. They frequently result in death, permanent disability or personality change and, unlike bone, neurological tissue has very limited ability to recover after an injury. Therefore, the primary purpose of a helmet is to prevent traumatic brain injury while skull and face injuries are a significant secondary concern.

The conventional motorcycle helmet has two principal protective components:

1. Outer Shell: It is made up of thin, hard, made from polycarbonate plastic, fiberglass, or Kevlar. The purpose of the hard outer shell is to prevent penetration of the helmet by a pointed object that might otherwise puncture the skull, and to provide structure to the inner liner so it does not disintegrate upon abrasive contact with pavement. This is important because the foams used have very little resistance to penetration and abrasion.

2. Inner Shell: It is made up of soft, thick, inner liner usually made of expanded polystyrene or polypropylene “EPS” foam. The purpose of the foam liner is to crush during an impact, thereby increasing the distance and period of time over which the head stops and reducing its deceleration.
Types of Helmets

1. Full face helmet covers the entire head, with a rear that covers the base of the skull, and a protective section over the front of the chin. Such helmets have an open cutout in a band across the eyes and nose, and often include a clear or tinted transparent plastic face shield, known as a visor, that generally swivels up and down to allow access to the face.

2. Motocross and off-road helmet has clearly elongated chin and visor portions, a chin bar, and partially open face to give the rider extra protection while wearing goggles and to allow the unhindered flow of air during the physical exertion of this type of riding. The visor is to allow the rider to dip his head and provide further protection from flying debris during off road riding. It will also keep the sun out of the eyes of the rider during jumps.

3. Modular or “flip-up” helmet, also sometimes termed “convertible” or “flip-face”. When fully assembled and closed, they resemble full face helmets by bearing a chin bar for absorbing face impacts. Its chin bar may be pivoted upwards (or, in some cases, may be removed) by a special lever to allow access to most of the face, as in an open face helmet.

4. Open face or “three-quarters”, helmet covers the ears, cheeks, and back of the head, but lacks the lower chin bar of the full face helmet. Many offer snap-on visors that may be used by the rider to reduce sunlight glare.

5. Half helmet, also referred to as a “Shorty” in the USA and “Pudding Basin” or TT helmet in the UK. It has essentially the same front design as an open face helmet but without a lowered rear in the shape of a bowl. The half helmet provides the minimum coverage.
Some helmets provide additional conveniences, such as ventilation, face shields, ear protection, intercom etc too.

Some of the World Popular Helmet Brands
1. HJC
2. Shoei
3. Arai
4. Icon
5. Scorpion
6. Skid Lid
7. Thor
8. Bell Helmets.

Motorcycle riders, scooters, racers must choose the best helmets as per their requirements a this is the most important safety and life saving accessory for two wheeler riders.

Public transport plays a decisive role in solving urban congestion and air pollution. But what can be done to persuade more people to leave their cars at home and use public transport instead? A foretaste of what will attract tomorrow’s passengers can be seen on the streets of Göteborg, where a new bus will be in regular service for three months on the city’s busiest bus route, no. 16.Within the framework of European Bus System of the Future (EBSF) programme, researchers, companies and public authorities are working together to create new solutions for tomorrow’s bus-based public transport.

One of the sub-projects is taking place in Göteborg in the form of a cooperative venture between Volvo Buses, Chalmers University of Technology, public transport authority Västtrafik and transport operator Veolia. The aim is to develop and test a bus with properties designed to attract more passengers while at the same time offering the conditions needed for cost-efficient operation.

The optimal city bus must be inviting and safe to ride in, it should be convenient to board and exit, and the journey should be quick. These are the main areas on which we have focused with the new bus we are currently testing in regular service,” says Peter Danielsson, project manager at Volvo Buses.

The starting-point for the design of the new bus is a behavioural science study and various simulation exercises in which researchers from Chalmers investigated how passengers respond to different situations on a typical journey. The researchers also interviewed 300 passengers who regularly use route 16 to find out what they feel about using public transport. The result is an articulated bus that differs in many respects from the vehicles that normally operate on the streets of Göteborg.

In order to make it easier to get on and off the bus, the door openings at the front are much wider than normal and are located behind the driver so passengers walk straight into the bus. The doors open outwards so as not to encroach on passenger space and they open and shut with a quick sideways movement, somewhat like on a metro carriage. Boarding height adjusts closer to kerb height at the bus stop to make things easier for passengers with mobility difficulties and those with baby carriages.

Toyota is set to jolt the second-hand car dealer industry when it begins to import used Toyotas into the country for auction.

The company will set up the car bazaar near Belle Vue on Mombasa Road where it has bought land across from the Kenya Bureau of Standards premises.Toyota will bring in cars ranging from five to seven years old which it will also guarantee in quality, mileage and function. The move is likely to hit second hand auto dealers hard as Toyota is the most sold brand in this category.

Outgoing Toyota Kenya MD Hylton Bannon said work is currently ongoing to put up the auction premises and a Toyota service centre at the location. “We will bring them and sell them by auction,” Bannon said. He spoke during the opening of Toyota’s Westlands’ service centre on Monday evening.

The facility is meant to serve the firm’s clients in the area who have previously been forced to go to Industrial Area for service. Another facility is to be put up in Gigiri.

Toyota reckons by selling used vehicles it will not cannibalize its new vehicles sales as they address different demographics. “The average Japanese trades in their vehicle after five years,” a Toyota representative said explaining why the company will bring in vehicles starting at five years old.

Currently, most of the used vehicles imported tend to be eight years old in accordance with the law. Some, Toyota said, have their odometers rolled back to reflect false mileage or have been in accidents. The vehicles Toyota will bring in will have a warranty of about three months.

The move will also ease the load for Kenyans who have to go through middle men and sometimes lose their money seeking to import ex-Japan vehicles. Toyota will also set up a major parts centre at the auction that will serve the region. The only other one is in South Africa.
